Not sure what size you need? Here's a simple breakdown of everything you'll see on a Stud Life product page: gauge, length, and top size.
Gauge (the thickness of the post)
Gauge is how thick the actual post is, not the front of the stud. Most healed piercings sit at 16g or 18g, but always go with whatever your piercer originally used unless you've been told to size down.
| Gauge |
Millimetres |
| 14g |
1.6mm |
| 16g |
1.2mm |
| 18g |
1mm |
| 20g |
0.8mm |
Not sure what gauge you're wearing? Check the jewellery currently in your piercing, or ask your piercer, sizing down to a thinner gauge than your piercing is set at can cause irritation.
Length (how far the post sits from front to back)
Length is the distance from the back of the disc to the front of the top, essentially how much room your piercing needs to sit comfortably without being too tight or too loose. Fresh piercings usually need a bit more length to allow for swelling, healed piercings can often size down.
| Length |
Millimetres |
| 1/4" |
6mm |
| 5/16" |
8mm |
| 3/8" |
10mm |
| 7/16" |
11mm |
| 1/2" |
12mm |
If you're unsure, it's almost always safer to size up slightly than too tight, a stud that's too short can embed into the skin as swelling changes.
Top size (the visible front of the stud)
Depending on the design, this shows up as disc size, ball size, or stone size, it's simply how big the visible part sitting on top of your skin is.
| Size |
Millimetres |
| Extra small |
1.5mm |
| Small |
2mm |
| Medium |
3mm |
| Large |
4mm |
Smaller sizes suit delicate placements like a second lobe hole or a nostril, larger sizes show up more and work well as a statement piece or for a first lobe piercing.
